HISTORY OF SHIP

 The known fact

At first, we made ships, first small and primitive(boats) and then larger and more sophisticated.
In the beginning, some 10,000 years ago, people used rafts made from bamboo, bundles of reeds, air filled animal skins and asphalt covered baskets to cross bodies of water. First uses for these kinds of boats were for travel and food gathering (fishing). By around 3000 BC, Ancient Egyptians made ships from wooden planks and woven straps and used them in trade. The first recorded ship with name belongs to them. It was called Praise of the Two Lands from 2613 BC.

When was invention of ships?
  • Beginning about the 4th century BCE. Ancient Egyptians were among the earliest ship builders. The oldest pictures of boats that have ever been found are Egyptian, on vases and in graves. These pictures, at least 6000 years old, show long, narrow boats. The Egyptians used their ships to trade with other countries around the Mediterranean sea. Egyptian ships were powered by many men who used oars to propel the ship through the water.

  • Minoan civilization in Crete had evolved into a naval power in 2000 BC.

The Minoan Ship is 17 meters long. It took about 4 years to create. The materials and methods used for its construction were the original ones used by the ancient Minoans: the keel was made from cypress trunks, and its waterproof sealing was made from layers of fabric dipped in a mixture of resin and beef fat.
The construction of the Minoan Ship was completed in early 2004.

  • Phoenicians were the first to sail completely around Africa.

The Phoenicia was built using knowledge of construction techniques from discovered wrecks. The hull was made sturdy by using tenons to join planks together and then drilling holes and hammering pegs through the joints (pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery), after which the ribs of the ship were fit in.
They were used in Shipping gold from Africa, tin from Britain and linen from Egypt, the Phoenicians were once one of the most significant trading powers in the world. Their position as dominant seafarers has been noted by Homer, The Bible, and Ancient Egyptian artwork.
